KE&G is honored to have been part of the construction of the first net-zero school in the state of Arizona and the 12th in the nation. The building encompasses 88,693 square feet and provides schooling for approximately 350 students in grades six through eight. The new school is located on the US Army’s intelligence training facility at 155 Carter Avenue, and will primarily serve the children of military families.

As a subcontractor on the project, KE&G’s primary responsibilities included demolition, earthwork, concrete site structures, and site utility installation including gas lines, sewer lines, and manholes, as well as reclaimed water lines. Drainage system for the water harvest including tanks and pump system for the landscaping was constructed by KE&G. Asphalt paving, striping, and signage were also part of the work. KE&G crews installed concrete bleachers, building pads, curb, sidewalk, handicap ramps, and 2 box culverts. The project also included the installation of a dumpster pad, a flagpole base, a basketball court, a volleyball court, in addition to the outdoor concrete area. KE&G also constructed the parking lot at the Track & Field, which included light pole bases, headwalls at the pedestrian bridges.

An open ceremony for the new Colonel Smith Middle School was held on August 3, 2012.
